| KONSTANTIN SCHERBAKOV (Russia) |
With the recent release of Rachmaninov's Second and Third Piano Concertos, followed by the Complete Tchaikovsky concertos, Konstantin Scherbakov's endless repertoire accomplishments continue to amaze. Specialising in virtuoso repertoire, much of it previously considered unplayable, Scherbakov has gained international acclaim for his recordings of rarely performed music, such as Godowsky, Medtner, Shostakovich and, lately, performances of Beethoven / Liszt symphonies. |
Recently, his concerts took place in the Philharmonic of Cologne, Herkulessaal and Philharmonic Munich, Tonhalle Zurich, Prinzregententheater Munich, Liederhalle Stuttgart and Congress-Hall Luzern, with the orchestras such as Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Munich Symphony, Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra and Ukrainian State Symphony Orchestra, among others. Konstantin Scherbakov performed as a soloist on a tour of Germany and Switzerland with the Jekaterinburg Philharmonic Orchestra, with the Weimarer Staatskapelle on the Anniversary Furtwangler tour (the Piano Concerto by Furtwangler); he was performing as a soloist and conductor on an Italian tour with the Milano Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali, as well as with Orchestra da Camera di Padova. Other concerto appearances included performances of all Rachmaninov's Concertos with the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra on a large UK tour, with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, Arena di Verona Orchestra, as well as with the Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra - the Rachmaninov tour that the pianist dedicated to the composer's 130th Anniversary. The recital schedule took him to all European countries, Japan, Middle East, South Africa, to Asia, New Zealand and USA. Festivals of the past seasons included Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Klavierfestival Ruhr, Beethoven Festival Krakau, Lebanon Music Festival, Bad Kissingen, Rachmaninov Celebration Festival Zurich (where he performed the Complete Rachmaninov's Piano Works), Lucerne Piano Festival, Zurich Festwochen and Bard Festival, among others. In August 2005 Scherbakov played two recitals (Shostakovich 24 Preludes and Fugues) at the Salzburg Festival to a very enthusiastic critical acclaim: "One cannot play Shostakovich any better!" (Die Presse, Vienna, 10.8.05)
During 2008, Scherbakov will perform Tchaikovsky Concertos with the Philharmonic of the Nations Orchestra on a German tour, with the Malaga Philharmonic and Novosibirsk Philharmonic orchestras, the complete concertos by Beethoven with the Tel-Aviv Soloists Ensemble, as well as with the Süddeutscher Philharmonie and "I Pomeriggi Musicali" orchestra of Miland, where he will also make his conducting debut.
One of the key-pianists of the Naxos label, Konstantin Scherbakov has recorded over 30 CD's in the past decade. His latest releases include Symphonies Nos. 7, 8 and 9 by Beethoven / Liszt, the Transcriptions of the Bach's Cello Suites by L. Godowsky, Vol. 8 of the gigantic project "The Complete Works by L. Godowsky" ("Marco Polo"), and the Complete Tchaikovsky Works for Piano and Orchestra. Some recordings (Godowsky vol. 5 and 7, as well as Symphonies No. 7, 8 and 9 by Beethoven/Liszt) have received the German Critic's Award, where as his earlier recording of the 24 Preludes and Fugues by Shostakovich received the Cannes Classical Award (the distinction that such pianists as Ashkenazi, Brendel and Ushida were honoured in the previous years). Scherbakov was one of the first artists signed by EMI for their Debut - Series and in 1995 he became a "BBC International Artist".
Born in Siberian town of Barnaul, Konstantin Scherbakov was trained at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire with the legendary professor Lev Naumov. After winning an array of prizes at prestigious international competitions (Montreal, Bolzano, Rome, Zurich) he performed with all the leading orchestras of the former Soviet Union, and played recitals in more than 100 cities in his native country. The triumphant winner of the first Rachmaninov Competition in 1983, Konstantin Scherbakov launched his international career in 1990 at the XXth Chamber Music Festival of Asolo where he performed the complete Rachmaninov works for piano solo in four recitals to manifest approval by Swiatoslaw Richter.
